Air Conditioning Refurbishment is generally related to Refrigerant Retrofits, this involves removal of the old refrigerant and replacement with a new refrigerant that is more environmentally friendly. Retrofitting a refrigeration system to use a different refrigerant is done for a number of reasons:

• Older types of refrigerant are being phased out due to environmental legislation, in an effort to reduce HFC polluting and depleting the ozone
• Newer types of refrigerant contain lower GWP (Global Warming Potential)
• The availability of newer refrigerants also provide performance benefits, such as lower power consumption.

The implications of retrofitting a system depend on the equipment and refrigerant involved. In some cases, it is a very easy process with minimal system changes, however in the majority of cases, retrofitting a system can be a more complex process, potentially involving oil changes, system flushes or even changes to portions of the refrigeration system which can be labour intensive. It is sometimes more cost effective to replace the whole refrigeration system.

An increasing number of new refrigerants, including many natural refrigerants, are flammable. Therefore these gases are not suitable for retrofitting to existing fluorocarbon refrigerant systems.

In many situations, a chiller system would benefit from being refurbished. Equipment could then be replaced over a period of time, allowing you to budget for costs. Benefits can include:
